Most days at some time a raptor cruises through the garden on the off chance of a snack. Usually, it’s a Cooper’s Hawk and usually they just scare the other birds but catch none. Late this morning, lunch was served.
Interesting to see that the Hawk consciously ate the brain first (maximum food value) before turning to some furious plucking and attention to the offal. The meat was eaten last … followed by a lengthy period of quiet digestion.
I commented about the brain having been taken first … this behavior is commonly observed in various raptors. The brain is high in fat and protein, which are crucial for maintaining energy levels and overall health, especially in cold weather.
Hawks may eat the head first to ensure the prey does not escape, although this is more speculative … and then, of course, some birds simply seem to prefer the head,
I almost didn't give this a ❤️ because I dislike how cruel nature is. But I thought, whether we like it or not this the way nature operates since time began
I suspect someone must have eaten the brains of our leader down here. Can Canada accept my Left Coast (Washington Oregon California) as a new province? We have such a large economy that 🇨🇦 will become a superpower!
Wow - your garden is a very exciting place, Richard!! Although I did see a muskrat braving the frigid waters this morning...but he didn't eat anyone's brains...
