In a parallel universe.
Considering the wildlife and plants we live near, yet often overlook, matters environmental, and gardening for wildlife.
I have been writing articles about wildlife and wild gardening since the summer of 2023 and publishing them on Substack (https://1001species.substack.com) where they will continue to appear. I have now opened a “parallel” website, simply because it is becoming evident that the people at Substack would like me to start charging readers for subscriptions – after all, that’s what they are in business for – and their algorithms, or so I have learned, are being subtly tweaked to reduce the discoverability of free sites from which they make no money. The new site will mirror a good number of the Substack articles, but also contain original material that won’t make it to Substack. Early days, starting slowly, but this is where the interesting rabbit holes will be found and where my Substack articles will be archived if ever I am cut adrift. Consider it a Plan B, I have no wish to leave the Substack world.

Thank you so much for doing this. I enjoy reading your newsletters and am grateful that I can do so for free. This allows me to make donations to Birds Canada, CPAWS, and the Wild Bird Care Center. We have to do what we can, but it's also nice to be able to read about what others are doing. I guess it makes sense that SubStack wants paid subscribers, but once the system is in place, what difference does it make to them? I suppose there's the cost of running the servers?
