I keep marveling at our young goldfinches. They love our swiss chard, even now that it's frozen. In the Fall I noticed it was being eaten, and thought it was earwigs. I knew it wasn't the rabbits because it was in a raised box. Then I saw the finches pulling at the leaves and eating them. My husband just threw the plant on the ground, when he cleared out the box, and now they still keep coming to it. I didn't know they were vegetarians. Have you heard of that?

I have not noticed this and had to look it up - seems that Goldfinch often eat sunflower leaves and so why not other leaves if they are available. I will do some more reading ...

I've never noticed them eating other plants. Just the Swiss chard. Maybe they noticed the iron content. Or another theory I had, was that these seemed to be the youngsters, and they were experimenting with what was edible and what wasn't, and they decided they liked the taste. Maybe it'll be a whole new trend.

She is based in Hudson, just west of Montreal. Here is a link to her website. The hare in my photos is large, close to life size
