What an exciting find! I've never seen one in real life, but we frequently come across devil's fingers...

My first and only encounter with earthstars was in Yellowstone NP. They were growing by the Porcelain Pool, under nearby pine trees. I was thrilled

Thanks for sharing this Richard - That is definitely a wild looking fungus - Never seen anything like it! I find all these fungi quite mysterious. Our yard has been home to bright orange and yellow "chicken of the woods" and that one that looks like dog vomit and one year we had a huge mushroom push it's way up through three inches of asphalt on the driveway...it was like watching a slow-motion pimple and I have to say I found it quite exhilarating!

That's a great find! As you say, earthstars look a bit alien. We have a couple of species in Scotland, Isee them quite frequently.
