We use old tennis balls to protect eyes from garden canes. This one was adorned with the abandoned cuticle of an emergent Cicada that is now away somewhere singing its several hearts out.

I actually watched one emerge from its final exoskeleton some years ago, pale green slowly turning darker over quite a long period when it was exposed on the trunk of a tree.
