Woolly Bear
23 July
First appearance this summer of Virginian Tiger Moth caterpillar (Spilosoma virginica) - the caterpillar is often called the Woolly Bear caterpillar. Adult moths are white with a few black speckles. This specimen was at about head height on a stem of Golden Rod.
The caterpillar is completely covered in thin, long, dark hairs. The bristles are not poisonous, but they can cause skin irritation to sensitive skin.
