I have never seen so many colourful birds in one garden! I have a small wildlife pond that I dug three years ago and have made the usual mistake of making it too small. A bit of pool envy going on here.

Very cool video, amazing to see the variety of wildlife that visits your pond.

Agreed that there is still not enough gardening / rewilding, I drive by house after house after house that has a token tree and a few shrubs (often the minimum required of developers when building) and so much mowed grass.

I am fortunate to live in a small suburban municipality where gardens are a bit bigger than average (by no means large) because we have no sewers, septic tanks are the thing and they need a minimum land area to work. There are also bylaws protecting trees. These factors help a lot but even then mown lawns predominate ... but gradually other options are being adopted.

That makes sense. We’re on septic too (but firmly in the country). I know the more traditional / older septic systems don’t allow much more than grass and perennials planted over them, so I imagine that contributes to a lot of mown lawns. I think there’s a shift occurring here too, it’s just very slow.

Some people use that as an excuse to justify their lawns but we have no lawn at all, just coneflowers and asters and golden rod etc and the septic works away just fine. Just checked the card from the trail camera and have had Black-throated Blue and Green Warblers within the past hour.

Great how-to. Do you worry about racoons setting up residence?

You will see from the short video that raccoons do visit at night but they are always just passing through - lots in the town but they never cause trouble
