I believe your living weed control is a groundhog and not a marmot. Marmots live at higher elevations and their range doesn’t extend to this part of Canada. The French word for groundhog is marmotte. Very nice pictures though.
You are right, a ground hog anywhere else, but my "marmotte" (the spell checker auto-corrected and I didn't notice) is francophone and lives near Montreal. 🙃
I don't know what my marmots are eating, but one climbed all the way up onto my somewhat high deck a few minutes ago.

Pulonaria is a wonderful source of early forage for all the bees over here too
